2021 Symposium Is Now Virtual

The IMSSS Symposium this summer will be held fully online due to global health concerns.  While we are disappointed not to be meeting in Léon, Spain, we look forward to the rich program organized by Linda G. Jones and Oriol Catalán.

Presentations and discussions will be scheduled over a period of two weeks, from July 15 to July 30, using Zoom or similar format. Please mark your calendars!

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I hope you all are well. As you can imagine, we have been monitoring the evolution of the COVID-19 virus in Spain very closely. As many of you undoubtedly know, on March 14, the Spanish government declared a national state of emergency in order to minimize the spread of the disease.  At the end of March, the government will evaluate the situation and decide whether to extend the emergency obligatory measures. Obviously, the ability to celebrate the Symposium this July will depend not only on the situation in Spain but also on the extent to which the pandemic has been contained globally since this will determine whether there is a need to maintain the prohibitions and restrictions on international flights to and from Spain as well as other countries. The Council of the International Medieval Sermon Studies Society met this week to evaluate the situation and weigh our options regarding the possibility of maintaining the current date of July 17 to 21, 2020 or of postponing the Symposium to July of next year. I have been in touch with the Dominican house in León and they have assured me that we would be able to celebrate the Symposium there in the same place next year if need be. Since the situation of the pandemic is constantly evolving and the progression and trajectory of the disease differ from one country to another, the Council will wait until late April to communicate our definitive decision on the matter. The purpose of this message is simply to bring you up to date on the current situation.

Best regards and keep well,

Linda Jones
